The Best Summer Skincare Routine Ever
Finally summer is here, which means less clothes coverage and a lot more time outdoors. While you may have had your winter skincare routine down pat, summer is a whole new ballgame. The large increase in sun exposure, combined with the additional sweat, can wreak havoc on your skin, so it’s really important to continue to stay on top of your skincare. Here are a few tips that will keep your face glowing, and not from a massive sunburn.
Sunscreen: This should be at the top of every summer skincare list, and maybe thrown in a few more times just for good measure. Sunscreen is pivotal during this time of year, and not just on days that you’re going to the beach or the pool. Many people make the mistake of assuming that if you’re not lying in the sun, sunscreen isn’t necessary. This is simply not true. Whether or not you can see it, any time you’re outdoors the sun is damaging your skin. On a day-to-day basis you should have an SPF of at least 15 to 20 on, and higher if you’re planning on staying outside for a long period.
Moisturizer: In the winter our skin is so dry that we can’t seem to get enough of our moisturizer. However, when summer rolls around and the humidity rises, we tend to fall back on that usage. It’s important that you keep up your daily moisturizing routine. If your skin feels particularly oily, try an oil-free moisturizer instead. Moisturizers are a great way to ensure that you’re including some SPF everyday, but if your moisturizer doesn’t include any, be sure to rub some sunscreen in beforehand.
Exfoliation: With the amount of sweat that often happens during the summer, it makes sense that many would want to stick to their high frequency of exfoliation. Unfortunately however, exfoliation can leave your skin more sensitive to the sun. You don’t have to eliminate it entirely from your skincare routine, but instead stick to twice a week. If you use an acid exfoliation, be sure to avoid using it before a day at the beach, as it can cause heat and sun irritation.
Cleanser: Avoid heavy, creamy cleansers, as they may add to the oil build up on your skin. Instead, use a foaming cleanser to clear away any excess sebum and leave your face fresh.
Corrector: Sun discoloration is a real worry of many as summer rolls around. Add a dark spot corrector under your sunscreen in order to get some added sun protection and a great boost of vitamin C. There is also a new product called CC cream, standing for color correcting, which you can put over your sunscreen to create an even skin tone across your face.
Masks: Masks can be used for anything from oil absorption to calming redness, and there are several specific kinds that become of great use during the summer months. Use a clay mask to absorb any excess oil that your skin is creating while cleaning your pores. Gel masks help to calm irritation and redness, and can even help cool you off if you put them in the freezer for a little while beforehand. If you’re concerned about hydration, you can use a cream mask to give your skin the moisture it craves.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it’s important that you give it the care it needs. While summer may mean a better tan, it shouldn’t come with a high price tag. Follow an appropriate skin regimen and use high quality products to ensure that your skin will be glowing and healthy for many years to come.
