You know what’s a lot easier than trying to undo damage? Preventing that damage in the first place. There’s a lot of buzz surrounding preventative Botox treatments lately, and with good reason—it’s truly never to early to start! In fact, it could be the best thing you do for your skin in the long run.
Many of our Botox clients are women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who have developed wrinkles and creases from a lifetime of repetitive facial expressions, sun exposure, and other lifestyle choices like smoking. Though Botox can dramatically improve these women’s fine lines, wrinkles, and creases—especially when combined with facial fillers—it’s easy to think wistfully that if they’d started the treatment fifteen years earlier, their skin would look many years younger today.
According to Mary Lupo, a New Orleans-based dermatologist interviewed about preventative Botox by Vogue, anyone over 24 who is already developing finely-etched lines when the face is at rest is a good candidate for preventative Botox. If you haven’t yet developed any visible wrinkles, it’s probably too soon for Botox and you should just stick to retinol creams. But when you start to see the signs, Botox is a great way to improve your current appearance, head off future damage, and possibly save you from much more invasive procedures later.
It makes a lot of intuitive sense that paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles when you’re young will prevent wrinkles in the future. It also discourages you from using those muscles, kind of “training” your face. As those muscles get less use and become weaker, you’ll need less Botox, likely only a couple treatments a year.
And if you want some hard scientific evidence, check out the 2006 study that compared the appearance of two twin sisters, one of whom used Botox regularly for 13 years and one who didn’t. As you might expect, the one who regularly used Botox has a smooth forehead and minimal expression lines, and the other twin looks much older.
If you’re in your 20s or early 30s and starting to see fine lines or wrinkles, call us at Kucumber Skin Lounge to talk about preventative Botox! In fifteen years, you’ll thank yourself.
