The Sun’s Aging Effects on Your Skin

These days, we’re all aware of the damage sunburn can do to your skin, and most of us know about the harm in ultraviolet (UV) rays. But do you know exactly how too much sun can cause skin to age ahead of schedule?

Here are the startling truths about the sun’s aging effects on your skin…

Most of your skin problems are the sun’s fault. UV rays are often at fault for discoloration of the skin, rashes, rough texture and more. In fact, “up to 90 percent of the visible skin changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun,” according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Too much overexposure = wrinkles. When you are constantly overexposing your skin to the sun, your skins texture is changed and the elasticity of your skin is weakened. The outer layer of your skin, called the epidermis, becomes thicker and leathery, resulting in wrinkles.

Overexposure can also cause more serious problems. Sun can damage your skin by causing pre-cancerous or even cancerous skin lesions, reduction of your skin’s immune functions, discoloration or freckles, sallowness, and damage to your skin’s elastic and collagen tissue.

All of the above effects of sun damage result in premature aging of the skin – and who wants that?
